If the recent nationwide droughts have reminded us of anything, it’s that we live in a water scarce country.

According to the WWF, South Africa is the 30th driest country in the world. This, combined with often unreliable water infrastructure, means that we have to find smart ways to ensure water security when supply is low.

Luckily, JoJo Tanks offers a range of solutions to not only help you save water, but also save money by reducing your water bills.

One such solution is rainwater harvesting. As the name suggests, this is a technique of collecting and storing rainwater for use in and around the home.

JoJo’s Rainwater Harvesting Solution consists of a tank that accumulates water whenever it rains. It requires the installation of a pre-filtration solution, as well as suitable guttering and piping to transport the rainwater to the tank.

Harvested rainwater is mainly fit for low-grade uses. Even though all JoJo Tanks are lined with an FDA-approved, food-grade carbon black liner that prevents algae growth and keeps water fresh, the quality of the incoming water may well be an issue. Water collected off the roof of a building will need to be purified or boiled in order to be fit for human consumption. For irrigation purposes, however, this water is ideal.

JoJo’s Rainwater Harvesting System is simple to install, depending on the scale of the project. Smaller projects are perfect for the DIY-guy, but you might want to enlist the help of a professional for larger installations. Have a look at our handy list of JoJo-approved installers here.

Before purchasing your system, you’ll need to determine which size tank you need. Every installation is different, but we suggest you buy the biggest tank that budget, space and practicality allow. Your tank will need to be installed on a sound, level and smooth surface. Level paving will suffice, or a properly designed tank stand. Alternatively, you could have a concrete plinth built, ideally with a concrete surface bed at least 85mm thick.

When it comes to the hassle of changing your roof or gutters, don’t worry – with careful planning and execution, existing gutters require very few changes or alterations. The only roof surface not suitable for rainwater harvesting is thatch. Other surfaces just vary in efficiency and pitched or flat makes no difference.

JoJo’s Rainwater Harvesting Solutions are easy to maintain and will provide you with an unlimited, free water supply – a win-win situation for you, your wallet and the environment.
